Barcelona is a complex city ranging from its own beach to streets that are rich with gothic architecture and are dappled with sunlight streaking into its narrow alleyways. It is also filled with life as both tourist and locals go about their activities. This body of work tells a story of contrast both literally and figuratively. Contrast in sunlight and shadows as well as contrast in the seemingly quiet figures who are immersed in a chaotic landscape. I went in search of people engaged in their daily activities such as reading, working or smoking. The ones I found seem to have obtained a moment of quiet in a noisy environment.
I was particularly inspired by the interplay of light and shadow in the city’s narrow streets. Sunlight beams into the dark corners, illuminating the subjects. Many of these images contain a stark contrast of dark and light which highlights the subject’s actions and hides the surrounding details isolating the figures from their surroundings.
Color is also a large component of these images. Most of the images have a neutral tonal pallet with the occasional splash of vibrant color. As I photographed, I looked to balance the composition with different colors to bring the viewers gaze to the activity of the subject.
